TAMIU Ballet Folklórico History

History of the Texas A&M International University Ballet Folklórico

In 1996, Gabriela Mendoza-Garcia and six university students founded the Texas A&M International University Ballet Folklórico. The purpose of this group is to preserve the music and dance traditions of Mexico. Since then, the group has premiered Mexican folk dances from five regions of Mexico including Nuevo León, Jalisco, Nayarit, Veracruz, and Sinaloa.

Gabriela and the members of the TAMIU Ballet Folklórico organized the Las Posadas Concert in the Fall of 1997, and the Una Primavera Mexicana Concert in the Spring of 1998. Both dance concerts feature the traditions, music, and dances of Mexico. These concerts have been presented annually since 1997. The costumes, music, and choreography are carefully researched by Gabriela to ensure that they remain authentic and faithful to the period and region of Mexico presented. For her, the work is a labor of love, and in a relativly short amount of time our group has grown in all aspects.

This performing dance organization is comprised entirely of Texas A&M International University students whose attitude in its work has produced a dedicated and talented group of dancers. The Texas A&M International University Ballet Folklórico is the first performing group at the university. The group includes students from around the world. The ever growing list of nations whose citizens have contributed to the success of the group are as follows: Brazil, Canada, China, France, India, Mexico, the United States and Zambia.
